On July 16th we visited Robben Island, a small island off the coast of Cape Town. While the scenery in Cape Town is breathtaking, Robben Island - with it's rocky coastline and rugged landscape - has historically been a place of isolation and banishment. During the apartheid regime it was used as a political prison, and many of South Africa's most famous anti-apartheid activists were prisoners here for many years. Today it has been transformed into a living museum - a place for visitors to learn of it's history and celebrate apartheid's end.

Today the island is a wonderful example of the power of the truth and reconciliation process. Former inmates and former prison guards live here together in peace. They have forgiven each other. Today Robben Island is home to a school, a grocery store, and many homes..... but not a police station. And the crime rate? It's zero.

This visit to the island was inspiring and hopeful, despite the tragic history we learned of inside the prison walls.
The people who run the centre believe education is a key to ending the cycles of poverty and unemployment many of the area's residents face. What the girls of the choir didn't bargain for, though, was how much fun they would have with these students!

The afternoon started out with performance by both the Saskatoon Children's Choir and the South African students.
More formalities ensued as the choristers presented the 'We Care' kits they had assembled back in Saskatoon. But Hannah's words were anything but formal. As a local woman translated in Zulu, Hannah said:

"When we were putting together these kits, we had no idea how amazing you all would be - the people who are receiving them. And we all wish that these will contribute to your future and that you will use them and will remember us. Because I can say for sure that we will never forget you guys."

Many other girls expressed these same sentiments after the visit. Though the experience lasted for just a few hours, some powerful friendships and deep feelings were definitely shared.

(Benoit Ferradini/CBC)

There wasn't a single day that was more anticipated than the visit to Drakensberg and the collaboration with the Drakensberg Boys Choir. We pulled into the region late afternoon on July 12th and checked ourselves into the most luxurious accomodation of the tour - the Champagne Castle Hotel. But it was the next day everyone was all revved up for. It even merited a full evening spent by the chaperones steaming the girls performance uniforms!

The day began early, as the sunrise was still painting the region's mountains in a beautiful orange glow. Even in winter, the scenery here is spectacular. By the time the choir arrived at the school for their morning rehearsal the light had become much brighter and so had the girls' excitement. Some of the choristers spent a bit of time doing stretching exercises on the grounds, but I think it was so they could take a close look at the Drakensberg Boys doing their morning callisthenics nearby! Apparently the boys from the school had been anticipating the arrival of our all-girls choir for some time, too. So it was pretty much a mutual admiration society all day.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir is a world renowned ensemble. I've heard them described as the "Vienna Boys Choir of South Africa". All the boys live at the school. Along with a pretty rigorous rehearsal schedule, they give a concert performance every week. Their conductor is Johann van der Sandt, and he really knows how to make them shine, regardless of the style of repertoire they're performing

Two choirs joined them for this week's concert - our choir, and the Keystone State Boyschoir from Philadelphia. Each choir performed a set of their own, and they also formed a mass choir for a couple of songs.

Since it was an afternoon concert, the choirs were able to schedule a joint party which took place after our dinner back at the hotel. I've never seen the girls rip through the meal so quickly, or fluff themselves up so prettily! They were back with the boys in no time, and what happened then was exactly what happens with teenage girls and boys all around the world. It didn't matter that they lived very different lives in very different places. It didn't matter they had only met each other hours before. These were teenagers having fun together - flirting, dancing, visiting... I even saw one of the Drakensberg boys give an impromtu gumboot dance lesson to some of the girls!

Meanwhile, many of the adults enjoyed some time socializing together, too (though the SCC chaperones were definitely keeping an eye on things at the kids' party!). From the conversations I heard about it was clear Johann and Phoebe had really made a strong musical connection, so everyone ended the day on a high note.

When we walked in, the warm welcome we received from the youth pastor, Maxwel , and Juliana, the sound technician, confirmed this was a wonderful group of people we were dealing with

Music is the heart and soul of this congregation. The service opened with a performance from 'Anointed Platinum Voice', a group of powerhouse male and female vocalists backed by a full band. The moment the music began the congregation was up on their feet - moving to the music and calling out during meaningful moments. They responded enthusiastically when Bishop Ed Bilong encouraged them to turn to each other with good wishes, high 5's, and any number of of warm gestures.

When the Saskatoon Children's Choir took to the stage - performing music that was completely different from the musical offerings the church had presented - the congregation responded in a dynamic and magical way. And when the choir broke into a song with Zulu words - wow! The congregation cheered and shouted out and even sang along at points. I've seen the choir perform many times over the years, but I've never experienced an audience like this. The glow on the girls' faces during their performance made you realize they felt like a bunch of rock stars up there. And they were!

Need I say more? We had an unexpectedly up-close-and-personal encounter with an elephant when were on safari in the Pilanesburg National Park. But Gabrielle's encounter was even closer than the rest of us who shared the safari vehicle. That young male elephant strode right up to her and looked her eye-to-eye before actually puncturing the side of our open aired vehicle with his tusk! It was inspiring and a little scary, but that is a few seconds of our lives none of us will ever forget.

The elephant was definitely the highlight of our safari day, but Pilanesburg is home to a huge variety of wildlife. We saw so many beautiful creatures.

The springbok is South African's national animal. I'm no biologist, but the closest comparison I can make is as a delightful smaller cousin to a deer. Our guide told us the springbok has longer back legs than front legs, so they stand at a bit of an angle. This allows them to leap through the landscape on all fours if they are getting away from a predator - and apparently the noise of that is so loud it makes the predators think they're tough! And that saves lives for them. They can also run faster than 70 kilometres per hour!

In the range of familiar animals we saw were zebras, rhinoceros, antelope, giraffes, and wildebeests - though by familiar, I mean in name only! These are stunningly beautiful animals and the girls were excited and happy all day long.

Those safari vehicles were cold, though! We all put as many layers on as we could, including regulation hoodies for the choristers and toques for those of us outside the group. Yet still we wrapped ourselves up tight in the blankets the safari company provided for us. The cold could do nothing to dampen everyone's spirits... including Phoebe's. She almost didn't join us on the early morning safari - figuring she'd bypass the 6:00 am start time in favour of an afternoon adventure. But she got up along with the rest of us, and was she ever glad she did! That was definitely a day that we'll all be reminiscing about for the rest of our lives.

We saw the corner where that all started along with very touching memorial in the location. We also visited 'Pam's Creche', a school for young children. Pam's focus is to create a positive and safe educational facility and she's used to having visitors from afar!

Here's a taste of that youthful exuberance I mentioned:

The images we see of Soweto in the western world usually show the informal settlesments, often referred to by us as shanty towns.

Yet we learned today that there are very different neighbourhoods in Soweto - from lower class, to middle class, to upper class. The Porsches, BMW's and Audi's we saw in Bishop Desmond Tutu's neighbourhood were definitely in stark contrast to the poverty we saw around Pam's Creche! Like any where in the world the reality is always more multi-faceted than the stereotypes we like to impose on things.

The Saskatoon girls had a fun time visiting the young students in Soweto and went away feeling spirited themselves. The South African kids absolutely love technology. They were eagerly reaching out to touch cameras, microphones and anything else they could explore with their busy hands! Three of our girls I spoke with after a classroom visit were laughing enthusiastically about the reaction these young students had to their eyeglasses! These kids have a deep sense of curiousity about everything they see, and it's infectious.

Phoebe Voigts has done a few of these international trips with her choristers. It looked like she knew exactly when to crack open a surprise for the girls to keep their energy up and their spirits high. And she knows how to milk the surprise, too! While she was at the National Gallery, she bought a stylin' satchel for everyone in the choir with an inspiring quote on it that seemed just right for their African adventure - "Creativity takes courage"!

They turned the distribution of the bags into a game that lasted a good half hour! But the girls certainly didn't seem to mind the wait, and were kept in suspense the entire time about what the actual carrot that was dangling in front of them would look like.

Then it was onto the plane with fingers crossed that a good sleep would be part of everyone's journey. South African Airways made it easier by dimming the main lights for almost the entire trip. With the exception of meal times and a short layover in Dakar, Senegal, the plane was lit like an inviting cave... even if the seats weren't the most ideal place to curl up for a nap! Most of the girls managed pretty well, and even the leaders looked like they were getting some good shut-eye. But they all perked up in time to give an impromptu on-board performance for the passengers and crew of flight 208. And the South African flight attendants enthusiastically provided some authentic flair to their Canadian interpretation of Shosholoza.

Our long day(s) of travel finally ended and once Customs was cleared and South African currency was purchased, the choir made their way over to our first real "pit stop" on this South African adventure. This may not be a race around the world, but it is certainly plenty enough activity for all us of. A delicious meal was had by all at our hotel, and some relaxed table talk ended what had been a very long run.

What started out as individual adventures on the way to Washington, D.C. became our first collective gathering in our hotel near the Washington Dulles airport.
The Saskatoon Children's Choir has always had a strong committment to humanitarian initiatives. For this trip, they've raised money to put together school kits for African children, and they'll be taking many of these kits with them on their trip. Before their rehearsal on June 12, they took some time to put them together. In less than 30 minutes the girls assembled 350 kits! Each chorister will take one kit in her suitcase and the rest will be mailed to Africa by Canadian Lutheran World Relief.

As the choir explained to me, the concept of the initiative is simple. Canadian children collect items that are needed by children to enable them to go to school. CLWR provides the bags and takes care of mailing the parcels to places of need. Of course, for this trip some of the kits the girls assembled will be packed in their luggage to distribute while they're in South Africa. I tagged along with Sarah, who has sung with the choir for 9 years, as she made her way through the assembly line.

The line moved with great precision. After all, you can't assemble that many bags in such a short period of time without hustling! Even so, you could feel the choristers' excited energy. After all it was 3 weeks and counting down before take off! The room was alive was laughter and camaraderie and a barely contained sense of anticipation.

(CBC)

OK - there are recording gigs, and then there are recording gigs! This has to be the mother of all remotes for me and Chris. After all, normally when we go out and record a concert in the province, we either have our recording mobile with us - which is basically a recording studio on wheels - or we have a van packed to the rafters with consoles, pre-amps, mics and mic stands, and many other "essential" pieces of gear to ensure a successful recording.

Not this time!

(CBC)

Chris has spent weeks carefully planning the list of essentials for this - our first! - two week adventure on the other side of the world. And it certainly can't be a van packed to the rafters. So it's out with the console and any number of other items. Instead, portability is the key. If we're following the Saskatoon Children's Choir through every step of their journey, we've got to be able to run alongside them without being burdended down by too heavy a load. Chris has been in training for weeks now so his body will be ready for the physical demands of this trip. I haven't been so smart - aside from my usual walking and bike riding activities, the only extra activity I've had is a few beginner tennis lessons! So I guess I'll be building muscles as I go.

Both our brain muscles have definitely been getting a hearty workout as we've tried to anticipate everything we need to consider before flying off to sub-Saharan Africa. You'd think deciding on the actual gear would be the hard part, but that's only the first in a series of steps designed to help you get your gear safely through Canadian, American, and South African customs. And that's before you start dealing with the actual rigors of airport travel!

So we're going into this journey with our eyes wide open. And happily all the details we've had to attend to haven't dampened our enthusiasm for the experience we're about to have.
Now the main packing I need to attend to is my personal luggage! (Note to self: it's winter in South Africa in July!)
