Student News Day in Saskatchewan is an opportunity for young people to tell a story about an issue important to them, and for you to learn more about the stories that matter most to our province's youth. Our thanks to the Prairie Valley School Division, Charity Marsh and the University of Regina, the File Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal Council Health Services and the staff and students of Bert Fox High School for their generous support. Here are the stories.

Welcome to CBC-Saskatchewan's Student News Day Project website!

Over the course of the next six weeks 9 students from Fort Qu'Appelle's Bert Fox high school will participate in the "Student News Day" project. Throughout this period the students will attend workshops on storytelling, creating a pitch, writing for different media, interviewing techniques, recording sounds, shooting video, editing, and on-line storytelling.

Prior to the start of the project, students were asked to pitch a story that had a connection to their community as part of the application process. From these pitches a number of stories are being developed. The overall goals of the project are for the students to create 2 news stories for television, 2 news stories for radio, an interactive blog, and 2 stories for additional on-line formats (YoutTube, Facebook, etc.). The news stories will be aired in mid-March, while the on-line media formats will be launched throughout the six weeks at different stages.

The team working with the students and mentoring them through this intensive project consists of experts in various areas of media and broadcast journalism.

The radio stories are almost complete with one just needing a little tweaking. For the television stories we need some additional footage.

Rather then coming out to the Fort n Wednesday, I've decided to stay at the IMP Labs and organize the remaining footage to see what we have left to do to put these stories in the can.

Change in plans

Considering the freezing rain weather and poor driving conditions, I've decided to come out to the school tomorrow morning first thing. This means that you have today to finish up any additional interviews, nat sounds, etc. for the stories that you've been working on so far.

How are your radio interviews coming? Has anyone had the opportunity to begin on-camera interviews? Have you recorded any contextual sounds or images?

Welcome to the storytelling blog

A major component of the Student News Day project is to participate in the Storytelling Blog at the very least, every other day. (Please feel free to blog every day or many times a day if the mood strikes.) Through this blog we will collaboratively tell the stories of how we make sense of the Student News Day project.
