Magazines and Newsletters (in English)

Folk Roots - This one is the best - it has excellent features on traditional and contemporary roots music from traditions all around the world, plus tons of album and live show reviews, extensive international festival information, helpful ads from indie bands and instrument makers & sellers, and an ecclectic 15 - 20 track sampler CD twice a year for subscribers. Get out your reading glasses - this one packs a lot of text between the covers. It's expensive, but well worth the money:

Rhythm (Formerly Rhythm Music Magazine) - A colourful, glossy mag dedicated to African, Latin, native American, new age and jazz fusion - this one is getting better with age. You can subscribe to the magazine on its own, or get a package which includes a world music sampler CD each month. Articles include "postcards" from people discovering musical traditions around the world. Good source of ads for percussion instrument makers:

New Internationalist - An excellent magazine of international culture, politics and economy. NI is about "the unjust relationship between the powerful and the powerless in both rich and poor nations". This magazine gives you stories you'll never see or hear in the mainstream media. A must read if you consider yourself more than just a cultural tourist:

Outpost - An award-winning magazine for adventure travellers (not tourists). The writing is engaging and wordly-wise, and the photos are great. Recent issues have included stories on Senegal, Cuban Santaria, extreme winter activities, Garifuna culture, malaria, and much more. And it's cheap! Just $14 for 4 value-packed issues (in Cdn. or US currency depending on where you live).

Canadian Record Distributors World Music Labels - Who is Distributed by Whom in Canada

Most record stores will go out of their way to help you find an album. However, I have stood in record stores wanting to buy an album that I know is available but that can't be found in the store's computer database.

Perhaps this has happened to you, too. This list is intended to help you when you go to your local record store asking for a specific album and the store clerk says "Sorry, I have no idea where to get it". This list does not include:

* single artist labels which may have domestic distribution deals. Try Festival and AVA first for music from independant Canadian artists.
* indie labels which do their own distribution. Try local indie stores, buy the records from the stage or in festival tents at live gigs, or mail order from the artist(s). Indies often have web pages, so surf!
* international labels which may be carried in the big downtown stores but are ordered directly from overseas labels or distributors.

* THIS LIST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE: The world of music distribution is a volatile one. Please tell me if you know something that I don't about any of these labels!
