It's become one of the most beloved stories in Canada- for children and adults. "The Hockey Sweater" is about hockey and winter and a child's longing to fit in and be part of the team, and it has a great twist in it that is by turn painful and very funny. In the celebrated tale, Roch Carrier describes his childhood obsession with the Montreal Canadiens and Maurice "Rocket" Richard in particular.     

The Hockey Sweater grew out of a request from the CBC to Carrier to write something answering the question, "What does Quebec want?" Carrier said he wrote a "flat" essay that he refused to put his name on. But producers at the CBC told him that they had reserved air time for him and had already announced his appearance, so Carrier decided to write something else. He thought about his boyhood, and he began writing the story...
Carrier has published numerous novels, plays, short stories and poems, but The Hockey Sweater is probably his most famous work. It was first published as Le chandail de hockey in a French-language collection of stories. The tale was translated into English by Sheila Fischman and published in a collection called The Hockey Sweater and Other Stories in 1979. A year later, the National Film Board turned it into an award-winning animated short, narrated by Carrier, called The Sweater.
