Today an hour that features one of the greatest jazz singers of all time- Billie Holiday. She was born to a teenaged mother in 1915 as Eleanora Fagan. She was abused at an early age and worked as a teenaged prostitute. But beyond those bare facts, the details of Billie Holiday's early life are sketchy. Her autobiography "Lady Sings the Blues" is mostly fabricated.
Suffice it to say that Holiday's early years were about as tough as they come. And yet out of this unlikely beginning, she went on to become one of the most influential and breathtakingly original jazz singers of her time.
