Since its inception more than 20 years ago, THE PASSIONATE EYE has developed into the most successful international documentary showcase in Canada. It offers a critical window on the world, exploring world events and people through stunning, timely and thoughtful award-winning documentaries. Provocative, and often with a strong point of view, THE PASSIONATE EYE is now one of the only places in Canada where viewers can see a selection of the world's best and most newsworthy political and social issue documentaries.
Season Highlights for 2013/14 include:
Project Nim
From the Oscar-winning team behind Man on Wire comes the compelling story of Nim, a chimpanzee who became the focus of a controversial experiment which aimed to show what would happen if baby chimps were taken from their mothers at birth and raised as humans. Winner - Sundance Film Festival Best Documentary Director for James Marsh (Man on Wire).
Gideon's Army
Winner of Best Documentary Editing at Sundance Film Festival and screened in competition at Hot Docs, this story of justice and injustice takes us into the heart of the American legal system in the South, where we meet three dedicated but overworked public defenders as they struggle to provide their mostly black clients with a fair trial. Directed by
Dawn Porter.
Atlantic Mega-Tsunami
Could we survive a mega‐tsunami in the Atlantic Ocean? Using groundbreaking science and tsunami modelling, this feature documentary will not only explore how a mega-tsunami could happen and how we might cope, it will also analyze the Atlantic basin's geological history and examine how previous tsunamis have affected the Atlantic region.
10%: What Makes a Hero?
What type of individual maintains the integrity to fight for what is just under any circumstances? What compels someone to jump into a river, risking his own life to save a stranger? Why, during the Second World War, did some Germans put themselves at risk in order to save Jews? 10% attempts to penetrate and understand the makeup of the human soul, and why 10% of people are willing to put themselves at risk in order to perform what others consider heroic deeds. Directed by Yoav Shamir (Checkpoint).
The Vasectomist
From Emmy Award-winning director Jonathan Stack (The Farm), a controversial and often humorous journey into the world of a modern-day Don Quixote committed to the impossible quest of lowering population on the planet, one vasectomy at a time. Part dreamer, madman and visionary, we follow Dr. Doug Stein as he travels the world, confronting difficult ethical questions surrounding birth control and the reluctance of men to be involved in family planning.
