Set in the late 1890s Toronto,
MURDOCH MYSTERIES explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson, Sue Thomas F.B. Eye), a handsome detective using radical forensic techniques for the time, including fingerprinting and trace evidence, to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders. Though his unconventional approach often elicits scepticism from his boss, Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig, Coronation Street), Murdoch is often the only one who can crack the case.
Murdoch's small circle of confidantes includes pathologist Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy, Durham County), a staunch ally who shares the detective's fascination with forensic science, and Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching and Dispatching), Murdoch's eager but inexperienced right-hand man.
Season five of the internationally acclaimed series finds Detective William Murdoch in the Yukon trying his luck as the Klondike Gold Rush winds down. In the wake of his personal and professional problems, Murdoch has left Toronto intent on starting a new life. But despite his suspension and Dr. Ogden's recent marriage to another man, Murdoch soon realizes that while he had hoped to leave his shattered heart and tattered career back in Toronto, his days as a detective are not behind him. Upon his return to the investigative beat, Murdoch finds that Dr. Ogden has taken on an accomplished female protégé, Dr. Emily Grace (Georgina Reilly; The L.A. Complex), a feisty and adept young coroner who immediately catches Constable Crabtree's eye.
The season ends with the turn of the 20th century and questions about the future following a case of supposed time travel. Will Brackenreid accept a new role in Ottawa and leave the department? Will Crabtree and Dr. Grace's professional relationship become a personal one? And what - and more importantly, whom - does Murdoch's future hold?
