Highlights of the 2013/14 season include:
Not Criminally Responsible
This is the story of Sean Clifton, who went to a shopping mall and in the grip of psychosis, viciously stabbed the prettiest woman he could see. Suffering from mental illness, he was found not criminally responsible and confined to a forensic psychiatric hospital for treatment. Twelve years later, the woman he stabbed is terrified to learn he's been released into the community under supervision. What if he seeks her out? As Sean applies for a conditional discharge and greater freedom, she fears he'll stop taking the medications which control his mental illness. With unprecedented access to the patient, the victim and the psychiatric hospital, the documentary puts a human face on the debate over victim rights, public safety and the rights of mentally ill people who commit a crime.
The Condo Game
With its population exploding, Toronto placed a big bet on condo towers. Their number has doubled in the last decade. But in the summer of 2011, when panes of glass repeatedly fell from brand new condos onto busy city streets, people began questioning whether this was a safe bet - for individual owners and for the city. The Condo Game examines the forces at play behind the fastest moving condo market in North America.
Mission Asteroid
Scientists say there are more than 1500 asteroids which could one day collide with earth, many with the power to wipe out life as we know it. Mission Asteroid follows astronaut Pascal Lee and his team as they train for a mission to near-Earth asteroids in the harshest, most dangerous environments on the planet. If this space cowboy can't lasso an asteroid, how else can science save us from a doomsday rock?
The Upside of Superstition
We live in the most technologically advanced time in history, yet not only do we hold onto our superstitions, we are embracing even more of them. Multi-million dollar skyscrapers are designed with feng shui experts, sophisticated politicians carry good luck charms and famous athletes practice elaborate rituals to ward off defeat. This documentary explores why this instinct is so deeply ingrained in us and reveals that sometimes superstitions can actually be good for you.
The Zoo Revolution
There is no institution more adored or reviled than the modern zoo. Despite the popularity of zoos with the public, the debate over whether wild animals belong in captivity continues. Critics argue zoos traffic in living creatures, exploiting them for profit and amusement. Zoos counter that they educate the public and provide refuge for vanishing species. As habitat destruction and mass extinctions accelerate, zoos may be our Noah's Ark. But is it time to re-invent them?
Love Under Other Skies
More and more single women are travelling to Cuba for sex. The majority are in their 30s and at least a quarter of them end up in long-distance relationships with Cuban men -- sometimes leading to marriage. What motivates these women? Are the men simply desperate to escape poverty? Love Under Other Skies tells the intimate stories of several couples and explores whether this is sexual liberation or exploitation.
Deadly Designer Drugs
The use of designer drugs has skyrocketed and Canada is now the world's third-largest producer. Entirely synthetic, they mimic organic drugs and are extracted from industrial chemicals and everyday products like cold medicine. The most common, ecstasy, has been responsible for a spate of deaths in Alberta and B.C. Deadly Designer Drugs goes inside the world of designer drugs, from the cooks who distill the chemicals in kitchens from hell, to the dealers and users.
Rescue Me
Doc Zone chronicles an epidemic of dangerous thrill-seeking, from flying off cliffs with no ropes, to hurtling down the sides of volcanoes on surfboards. As adventurers push themselves to more extremes than ever before, search-and-rescue teams are pushed to the limit trying to save them. Rescue Me follows dramatic rescues as they unfold and looks at what drives these thrill-seekers.
