The Cost of Incarceration
January 5, 2012 10:14 AM
Redemption Inc is a show mainly about second chances, but one of the points of discussion that comes out of the show is the cost of the crime - whether that be to imprison criminals or the cost of crime to society in general.
Justin Piché an assistant professor at Memorial University, discusses the costs involved with the Canadian corrections system and to society in general, and how that money could be spent differently.
Piché also talks about how the proposed Omnibus Crime Bill C-10 will affect pardons and how that could cause former convicts to turn back to a life of crime.

Justin's research focuses on the normalization and proliferation of imprisonment inside and outside the penal system, alternatives to incarceration and the cultural representation of confinement and punishment.
He is also the co-managing editor of the
Journal of Prisoners on Prisons and maintains a blog,
Tracking the Politics of Crime and Punishment in Canada, with his research findings and commentary.
