Teachers' dispute heats up

It's been the busiest day in weeks for the BC teachers' labour dispute.  First, the teachers got permission for a limited strike. Then the government introduced legislation to stop a strike. Rebecca spoke with legislative reporter, Jeff Davies to try to make sense of it all.

Greenwood: Best Municipal Water

Greenwood

The tiny city of Greenwood has a new claim to fame now. You might know Greenwood as the smallest official city in Canada. Well, now it has the best municipal water in the world.
That's according to the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition. Organizers of this past weekend's event, call the competition the biggest of its kind in the world.
 
And when the judges tallied the results in the municipal water category, Greenwood came out on top. Mayor Nipper Kettle spoke with Rebecca.

Privatizing BC's Liquor Distribution Branch

There were a few surprises in yesterday's budget. One is a plan to privatize the BC liquor distribution branch. There are two warehouses, one in Vancouver and one in Kamloops.

Together they employ about 400 people.




Finance Minister Kevin Falcon says the sell-off will fetch 700 million dollars for the province over the next three years.

Rebecca spoke with Darryl Walker. He's the President of the BC Government and Service Employees' Union.

Fracking and Earthquakes

A researcher from Simon Fraser University says it may be too soon to determine how fracking is triggering earthquakes. John Clague presented his findings today at a huge international science conference in Vancouver. Fracking injects fluids into shale rock, to release natural gas. And some scientists believe that process is setting off earthquakes. Rebecca spoke to John Clague to help us shake down the truth.

First Nations' proposal for Burns Lake sawmill

Tomorrow, the chief of the Burns Lake First Nation will sit down with the CEO of Hampton Affiliates. Chief Albert Gerow wants to present Steven Zika with a proposal to rebuild the Babine Forest Products Mill. The mill was levelled last month after an explosion tore through the operation.  Two workers died and 19 others were injured. Rebecca spoke with Chief Albert Gerow.

Tragedy north of Williams Lake

Renowned international affairs expert and freelance journalist, Gwynne Dyer.
The Arab Spring uprisings are raising hopes that democracy could soon take hold throughout the Middle East. But Western governments are worried voters will elect fundamentalist Islamic regimes. Gwynne Dyer is a freelance journalist who has covered international affairs for more than 20 years. In 2010, he was appointed to the Order of Canada.

He is on a speaking tour that has him in Vanderhoof on February 9 and in Prince George on February 10. But first he checked in with Radio West for a conversation with Rebecca.

Prince George man conducts his way to a doctorate

New research centre at UBCO

How do police know when someone is lying? A new research centre at UBC's Okanagan campus hopes to help answer that question. The Centre for Advancement of Psychological Science and Law opens tomorrow. Dr. Zach Walsh is an assistant professor of Psychology. He's also one of the co-directors at the centre.
