Crosstalk August 14, 2013

Today's Crosstalk question is whether urban sprawl is becoming a problem in Nfld and Labrador. It's an issue the St. John's Board of Trade is raising in advance of this September's municipal elections. The Board is calling on the city of St. John's to think about building up instead of out. Partly to save money on infrastructure costs such as roads. But also to create neighbourhoods where people can walk to work or to pick up a carton of milk. Denis Mahoney chairs the St. John's Board of Trade. He's in studio, along with Shannie Duff, the outgoing Deputy Mayor of St. John's.

Crosstalk: Is classical music cool again

This afternoon on Crosstalk, we're asking a cheeky question, and that is whether classical music is cool again. We're asking the question at the same time that the Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival is underway in St. John's. Ticket sales have been healthy. And we're wondering if there's been a revival of interest in classical music. Joining me today, two people who can't get enough classical music. Well-known writer and broadcaster Marjorie Doyle. And violin player Dominic Greene.

Hummingbird Hawk Moth

31293262-L.jpgWe had a call from a listener in Green's Harbour this week about a humming bird visiting her yard.  Then another caller suggested that it might actually be a moth that looks just like a humming bird.  Nancy Brace managed to take a picture of her visitor, and sure enough, it's an exquisite moth.  Today Ramona Dearing is joined by entomologist Barry Hicks to tell us more about the cunning little creature.
