Shepards Pie from the kitchen of Phil and Robin Wilson.

Shepherds Pie


1 lb lean ground beef
1 small onion
1 tsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp beef oxo concentrate
1/4 tsp minced garlic or 1 clove
1 sprig of fresh rosemary
1 sprig of fresh thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
*Optional- 1 cup of cooked vegetables of your choice. (we often use leftovers)


5 medium russet potatoes
1 small sweet potato
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup cream cheese
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup cream or milk

- Peel, dice, and boil potatoes and sweet potatoes in salted water until soft.

- Meanwhile, start cooking the ground beef in a frying pan and give them a couple minutes head start before adding the rest of the ingredients for the beef. 

- When browned, remove any excess fat, taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper as required. 

- Mash the potatoes the butter, cheese, salt, and pepper into the potatoes and add cream until desired consistency is reached. 

- Spoon beef into 8x8 casserole dish and spread the potatoes on top. Make track marks in the top of the potatoes with a fork and sprinkle with a pinch of creole spice or paprika. 

- Bake in a 375 degree oven for approx. 45 minutes, then broil to brown the top. 

* Note: Traditionally, Shepherds Pie is made with ground Lamb, but hey, this is Alberta! We've also substituted ground pork which is also delicious.
