The Backstage View

I've always found the best place to watch a show is from backstage. Not for the sound quality, that's for sure, but because I get to see the stuff that the audience doesn't see. What the musicians do right before they go on stage, how they warm up, what their mood is, what's on their minds. From my sideways slice of vision offstage, I can pick up the nods and looks and cues passing between them far better than being out front.

In other words, I love to see the wires - what's holding everything together - how it works. When I ran across this series of pictures of Barack Obama and his family as they watched the elections results I had the same feeling. I learned just as much about the true nature of Obama from these pictures as I did listening to him speak.

I'm going to play a piece of music tonight that I think works as a soundtrack to this slideshow. American Dreams by Charlie Haden. If you want to play along, and are listening to the show tonight (Thursday, November 14) follow this link and watch along to the music.

Tell me what you think.

Laurie

It worked!

Thanks for the election picture link, Laurie.

As a pro photog & Obama fan I was hoping to view shots of him watching the results. I was a bit late to watch it with your chosen music but was so enraptured in the shots, I wouldn't have heard much anyway!

Neat idea! Why not try the partnering of visuals and sounds to other events/concepts/themes, etc. Maybe a once a week item??
Thanks Laurie.
And thanks for the consistently interesting, unusual and enjoyable show you and your crew bring to us via the Signal.

I thought the Obama pictures worked really well with the Haden piece. The unscripted, mostly unsmiling Obama that we saw in the photos resonated with the understated, detached beauty of the music.

I agree completely about the benefits of being behind the scenes. That's why I sometimes enjoy reading the collected letters of most writers more than the books they have written for publication. The writer's life is the source of the art itself, so why not just see the art in utero unpasteurized by commercial demands and social expectations?

Keep up the good work.

hello friday !
arthur monk i absolutely hear you as the "understated detached beauty of the music", haden and obama family was daunting as a venetian musical dramaturgy. most of all i write to say hello to a person who loves what i love, letters compiled from an author or painter. i can reread the letters of georgia o'keefe and many of the extraordinary photographers of her time, over and over. it is timeless and in particular the handwriting of georgia captivates me. i also like the letters of oscar wilde. i do like the concept placed forward by dennis helmuth, for partnering music and sound. two fine examples is the canadian tri country film venture, "the triplets of belleville", maybe 5 words total in the film ! and this i have chosen to do, i once didn't want to come out of my comfy position to find the remote for the monitor watching the film of " the pianist" with adrian brody a second time. i watched it with no sound reclined looking off my shoulder. i liked the visual intake so much, that the third viewing i put on the sound track of the film, with the film itself on mute, and again same position and it is a stunning revelation how different my perspective of the film, became with no dialogue. i can really see and hear this working for -the signal-. i am attempting to ween myself off the new radio2 blog as the posts by many continue to be the sea.saw of passion of new radio2 and "stereo" radio 2 and i always seem to pipe in my thoughts again and again..... as today already, ..." for it was non intrusive to my work/ concentration process. now it is mostly radio4 nederlands, but when friends arrive for dinner they ask i turn it off, never do i recall anyone requesting i turn off cbc. it was of such excellence that went with the transitions of humans every day experience in moods, emotions, energies. and yes, even seasons and sunlight. this friday, having skimmed the playlists, [of which often, nearly consistently, tempo's is not up even as the program airs] i am looking forward to tuning in to - the signal -Posted by: cynthia | November 14, 2008 09:54 AM to listen to a tune called "guyamas, sonora" by group flying club cup. and last night on - the signal- there was a tune on with 13 producers !
"twilight.tide" by rodelius. most fitting for a brilliant november full moon lit sky and clouds. and besides, i find -the signal- in particular and some of -nightstream- to have titles, only wizards of high intense creativity could come up with. quite fun to skim." how and why i seem to have many posts here for -the signal- is this is the program i listen to most frequently. as well as "inside the music " and ever fun stewart sitting on those 'vinyl' covered booths in the 'cafe'. truly how i thought of the program 11/12 years back !

thank you.
cynthia

hi signal,
please excuse my error of.. .. ' partnering "music and sound" '. it is obviously to be music and visual. auditory and visceral. right ? right !

thanks,
cynthia

I thought it worked brilliantly. Just how the quietness of the music seemed to echo the "quiet" of Obama before his life would change forever. All those pictures of him looking so serious, so humbled by what was happening seemed to flow out of the peaceful stateliness of the Haden piece.

Agree with Dennis that you should think about doing this again in some form. It doesn't have to mean you play Pink Floyd necessarily (ha!) but it's definitely a rich area that deserves to be explored further.

Also, what are the chances of posting a daily playlist here? I think it would give an added materiality to the music, for lack of a better term. It would make the music more real and it would be good for listeners to get to know the music better. I often don't have a pen handy when listening.

Thanks for the music. The Signal rocks -- well, if you can rock in 9/16 time, that is.

Christopher

Hi Christopher - Just to let you know, we do publish a daily playlist - it's just not that obvious. Over on the left-hand menu, there's a "playlists" option. It takes you to the playlists for all Radio 2 shows. You'd need to choose The Signal and then the appropriate day.

Thanks Caitlin! Fantastic. Sorry for being so lazy.

Regarding building on this idea for other themes/topics, etc.

for just one example: How about pairing a song-scape to some stills from http://www.cbc.ca/news/photogalleries/florasmission/index.html. I came across this by chance and found it to be inspiring, mostly delightful and hopeful Afghanistan story. I notice this video has 69 other endorsements/comments.

Careful pairing of still images and moving music: a powerful new 'signal' feature!?!

thanks again:
