Every road leads somewhere
What stretch of Canadian road do you think should be celebrated in song?
Road songs: they excite us with their promise of freedom and adventure. They celebrate open spaces and open roads. They tell us about bustling city streets paved with history. Canada is literally connected by special stretches of road, from highway to byway, Main Street to back street – and 13 of them will be immortalized as the GREAT CANADIAN SONG QUEST returns to Canada’s national music network, CBC Radio 2.
13 musicians – one from each province and territory – have been selected to add a new chapter to the Canadian songbook through the creation of 13 new original road songs. And just like last year’s Quest, Canadians have an important role to play. We’re inviting music fans across the nation to tell us which inspiring stretch of road you would like to see celebrated in song. Starting September 7th, log on to the Song Quest website and nominate an awe-inspiring stretch of Canadian road that you think should be included in these newly-commissioned songs.
Once the nominations are in, a short list of the top 5 roads in each province and territory will be revealed on September 22, and you can vote for your favourites. On October 1, the final roads will be revealed on the Song Quest website and the musicians will get to work writing new tunes. Those new road songs will be unveiled on CBC Radio 1, 2 and 3 on October 22, and will be available for purchase on iTunes. And on October 26, all 13 artists will come together in a special Song Quest concert at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto.
Throughout Song Quest, you can tune into Radio 2 Morning with Bob Mackowycz, (6 – 9 a.m. E.T. /6:30 – 9:30 a.m. NT), and Radio 2 Drive with Rich Terfry (3:30 – 7 p.m. E.T. /4 – 7:30 p.m. NT), for the latest updates and special programming.
