Peter and the Symphony: Part Ten
The tenth in an eleven-part series exploring some of the greatest symphonies ever written. Peter Oundjian, music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra joins series host Eric Friesen in this very personal perspective on works revealing the orchestra in all its power and glory - including symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz and Mahler. Peter has replaced his baton with a CD player for this insightful and intimate conversation, that includes off-the-cuff demonstrations on the piano and violin. Episode ten examines a work by the only living composer represented in the series : American John Corigliano (the "g" is silent in case you're wondering) You might be familiar with him for his work scoring the 1999 film The Red Violin or for his very first symphony , a response to the AIDS crisis, first performed in 1990 and now one of the most performed recent works in the orchestral repertoire. Today, Peter and Eric will explore Symphony No. 2, a rethinking and expansion of the surreal and virtuosic String Quartet (1995), It was introduced by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2000 and earned Corigliano the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Music For more information go to the Peter and the Symphony website at www.cbc.ca/symphonies [airs at 3 pm on Radio 2 and on Radio 1 at 8 p.m. in Ontario, Quebec, Central, Mountain and Pacific; 9 p.m. in Maritimes; 9:30 p.m. in Nfld.
