myTunes: Music And Identity
It's an understatement to say some of us feel such a deep connection with music that the music we like is a reflection of who we are. The Nerve tackles this subject today in an episode called myTunes: Music And Identity.
It's true the changes in technology make it easier than ever to slip through life with our own personal soundtracks. But does that make an even stronger connection between music and who we are? And why is music such a marker of identity, anyway?
You could view it as being cultural, or as a reflection of economic status and education. But there are plenty of contradictions to that theory too, just look at some of the people who you know who love music that seems to be outside of their own culture etc.
Some of the people talking about this today are David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet, throat singer Tagaq, tabla master Zakir Hussain and Bruce Cockburn (pictured here) among others -- a nice cross-section of very interesting people to talk about this very interesting subject.
What do you think: Are you your music?
