Sept 29- From The Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, Quebec - Idea of North - new commissioned songs by Canadian songwriters inspired by the Idea of North

What's your Idea Of North? Six songwriters have been asked that question, and they'll gather at Ottawa's Museum of Civilization to explore the answer through music. Representing everything from throat singing (Tanya Tagaq) to jazzy bluegrass instrumentals (Creaking Tree String Quartet) to art-pop (Veda Hille), the musicians will react to, re-interpret, re-think and re-write the Ideas of North presented in Glenn Gould's 1967 CBC documentary, through specially commissioned, new works.

Sprinkled throughout are excerpts from Gould's original documentary, and the musicians will also round out the broadcast by playing a few songs of their own that fit in with other Glenn Gould-related themes.

Tanya Tagaq (avant-garde throat singing/electronica from Cambridge Bay)
Veda Hille (arty piano-pop from Vancouver)
Creaking Tree String Quartet (jazzy-bluegrass-instrumental-folk from Toronto)
Catherine MacLellan (warm, delicate folk from PEI)
Grand Analog (literate, smart hip hop from Winnipeg)
The Flaps (imaginary soundtrack music from Ottawa)

The concert is followed by from Calgary: "Close in Distant Cold Light" by David Berezan

It's an homage to Gould's Idea of North, and is done partly in the style of his original piece, but also in the style of the Berezan's electroacoustic music. It uses interviews with several young people from around the globe (mainly from "southern" countries) as a distant commentary on "north", and transformed sounds that explore the different characteristics of "north", in a slightly more abstract and fantasy-like manner. The compostion was premiered in the UK in 2001 at the Birmingham Electroacoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST).

Oct 2 - LIVE from Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto - David Virelles, and Hilario Duran

Two generations of Toronto-based Cuban pianists pay tribute to Glenn Gould. Both artists will premiere brand-new Glenn Gould-inspired compositions for their own groups plus string quartet.

Oct 3 - from MONTREAL - "Don't be frightened. Mr. Gould is here..."

Glenn Gould did not think of himself primarily as a pianist; he was equally committed to writing, broadcasting, composing, conducting, and experimenting with technology. "Don't be frightened. It features three new works commissioned for the occasion by CBC Radio (from experimental composers Chantale Laplante, Louis Dufort and Martin Tétreault) that each interact in their own way with Gould's vast musical universe and recorded legacy. You'll also hear a rare performance of Glenn Gould's only major composition: his String Quartet, Opus 1 featuring violinists Jonathan Crow and Olivier Thouin, violist Neal Gripp and cellist Brian Manker.
