Today some of the top musicians in Atlantic Canada aren't feeling... well, let's just say they've felt better. Last night marked the final ceremony and afterparty for the 2011 East Coast Music Awards in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island -- and I can tell you from experience that this was the best one in years. Now, that could be because this year's event took place in April (it happened in February in previous years), so it was considerably less frigid and slushy than it's been in the past. It could also have something to do with the way the city of Charlottetown threw itself into the celebrations hook, line and sinker, making all of us feel incredibly accommodated. Either way, everywhere you looked, musicians were beaming and celebrating one another, having realized this event was particularly special.
I've been asked to write a little summary of the event, and honestly, I find that a little hard to do. There were so many events that stand out in my mind, so I thought I'd just throw it out there in jot note form -- grade 11-style:

The East Coast Music Awards (ECMAa) are unfolding as we speak, starting with a conference and showcases in Charlottetown, P.E.I., and building up to the awards gala on the weekend.
On Monday Canada Live airs an ECMA special with highlights from a number of performances, including Matt Andersen, David Myles, Rose Cousins, The Once and many others. Mr. Tom Power is in Charlottetown and he'll also share stories of the weekend that was. (There'll be stories galore, no doubt, and who better to tell them than Tom?)
Naturally, some of the musicians you hear on Radio 2 are up for the awards, so we're giving you a shortlist of some of the categories where this is especially true. Who would you pick to win?

Sometimes when your ears have been filled with music that technology has had its way with, it's refreshing to turn to music that is the opposite of manipulated and processed. And as February drags on, sometimes you also need something to lift you up a little too.
So if you are hankering for a jolt of acoustic energy from young musicians who love traditional folk, try this concert.
It showcases Newfoundland's The Dardanelles a band that features, on guitar and witty introductions, one Tom Power. Yes, that Tom Power, host of Deep Roots.
