The Vancouver Cantata Singers break new ground in presenting vital music in intriguing spaces. They discovered the Blusson Centre, a new medical research building attached to the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver General Hospital. From the pictures below, see that the award winning atrium of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre features a wrap-around ramp that winds above a central open space below, offering some truly unique performance possibilities!
Vancouver composer, Jordan Nobles creates music that envelops the listener in sound and that makes listeners want to "close (their) eyes and transcend into a cloud of music" (Discorder Magazine). Jordan wrote Stasis, Processional and Tombeau d'Ann Southam specifically for this venue: hear how CBC's mics captured these wonderful acoustics.
The other featured piece in this programme is Arvo Pärt's Te Deum, also written for split chorus, string ensemble, with a "prepared" piano and electric drone instrument. Not often performed, its compositional style suits to a T these acoustics.
