Canada Live marked a first, as it takes the show inside the walls of Her Majesty's Penitentiary in St. John's, with two local singer/songwriters: Craig Young - a boy from Burgeo, Newfoundland, who brings the worlds of Nashville and Newfoundland together within the confines of his country songs and finger-picking wizardry, and Anne Devine - one of St. John's most versatile musicians, who's recruited frequently by the pastoral care programme at the Penitentiary to play for inmates and staff within the prison walls.
This summer at the Writers at Woody Point Festival, the Newfoundland seminal trad/rock band, Figgy Duff, was celebrated. Led by founding member Pamela Morgan, this legendary group reunited for a 25th anniversary concert at the Woody Point Heritage Theatre in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland - the former Orange Lodge - where the building itself celebrated its 100th anniversary. Band alumni Kelly Russell, Dave Panting, Phil Dinn, Frank Maher and George Morgan were joined by an all star guest list, including Daniel Payne, Sylvia Tyson, Ron Hynes and Ellen Power.

Cameron Latimer studied Jazz at Malaspina College in Nanaimo and has played the guitar for 16 years. Shortly after his studies, he began playing in bands on the island and in Vancouver. Long the side man - Latimer's now stepping up to the centre mic and leading the show. This concert was recorded at the same time as he was releasing his debut album, "Fallen Apart". The style is alternative country pop music - coming to you from the heart of East Vancouver.
Eneida Marta's songs take their inspiration from the everyday life of Guineau Bissau. Singing in Portuguese and Kriol, in a style that is somewhat reminiscent of Cesaria Evora, Marta sings of the strength of the women in her country and the courage of living in the moment. Her band is percussion rich and utilizes such unusual instruments as the "tina" - a large gourd that is thumped while semi-immersed in a wine barrel.

Great Lake Swimmers are the kind of band that is best seen in a church but a church is not a typical venue for the NXNE festival and that is where the Canada Live team found itself recording. So, instead of a church it was The Reverb on Queen West. Shortly before the band was due to hit the stage the room started to fill with people wearing NXNE wristbands. This was obviously going to be one of the buzz shows of the festival. When the first chord was struck a hush fell over the crowd and the Great Lake Swimmers transported the audience to church.

Aggressive versus quiet. Seven versus one. It didn't seem like a very fair matchup when Vancouver's Fond of Tigers and Toronto's Sandro Perri met in CBC Ottawa's Studio 40 to meld their music. But the gentle-voiced Sandro and his subtly experimental folk proved a perfect foil to the rock-jazz improvisations of Fond of Tigers.
"A New Kind of Light" celebrates everything good that Christmas brings. It's about great music with singer/songwriters Jill Barber, Rose Cousins and Meaghan Smith - 3 of the brightest rising stars on the East Coast music scene. Since 2005, Jill Barber, Rose Cousins and Meaghan Smith have performed at the Annual Maritime Food Banks funding drive. For this year they gathered up their favourite Christmas songs, and added in a few original tunes that speak to the season, and put together a 10 piece "Blue Christmas Band" under the direction of Bill Stevenson, and the rest is pure seasonal magic.

1889), bassetl (shoulder strapped cello) and baraban (drum). Since its founding
in 1995, Budowitz has also served as one of Europe's main training grounds for
traditional Jewish music, and has won numerous awards: the BBC's Critics Circle
award for best CD, the Belgian Gandalf Award for Best Concert, and the British
Songlines Magazine's "Top of the World" award. It's Klezmer, the way it was meant to be
heard, on original instruments!

Jumelage is a French word that means twinning or pairing. This past February during the annual Festival du Voyageur celebrations in Winnipeg, one of the production companies produced a television show where they paired up various Quebecois artists. CBC took it one step further by inviting some of these visiting Quebecois artists to work with Manitoba musicians. This concert featured Florence K from Montreal along with several Winnipeg musicians. Florence K is impassioned about Latin music. She performed with two of her regular musicians, Norm Zabala her musical director and guitarist and Jesus Alejandro Perez who hails from Cuba. They were joined by Winnipeggers Rodrigo Munoz and Scott Senior on percussion and drums and Ken Gold on saxophone and flute.
2008 marked the 100th anniversary of St. Boniface, the hub of Franco-Manitoban culture. To celebrate, CBC Radio 2 paired up with local French radio to present a retrospective of the last 100 years of music made in St. Boniface.
Owen Pallett is known to his fans as the singer, songwriter, violinist, pianist, bassist, harpsichordist, engineer and everything else that makes up the indie-rock one-man band Final Fantasy. In his live performances Pallett plays his violin into loop foot pedals. Then he sings over the music. But this simple description doesn't do justice to the richly imaginative sounds he creates.
One of Zimbabwe's favourite a cappella and dance group graced us with its presence at the International Nuits d'Afrique Festival, in Montreal. This performing arts group grew from it's humble beginnings in 1982 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, to become internationally acclaimed. They perform in many styles including Imbube chants, gospel in English and Ndebele, as well as gumboot dancing. They bring with them rich melodies and harmonies as well as vivid descriptions of their beloved homeland. With their beautiful harmonies and intricate rhythms Black Umfolosi's music touches the heart.
Since they first started playing together in 2002, Le Vent du Nord has performed over 600 concerts worldwide. They have been having a phenomenal success on the trad scene. With their traditional and original compositions, their verve, generosity, and energy, they charm all audiences! This summer, they headed to the 14th edition of the Festival Mémoire et Racines, in Lanaudière, for a very special event featuring not only the four members of the group but also many special guests from the traditional music world. An evening of foot taping rhythms, amazing vocal harmonies and virtuoso performances by some of Quebec's best folk musicians.
