Today On Radio 2 3/10/08
This afternoon, the Radio 2 debut of Ron MacLean on Radio 2 Drive (3 p.m.-6 p.m.). Photographic evidence is provided on the right, and for more details please see Live On Drive: Ron MacLean.
The nutshell version is that Ron plays some of his favourite Canadian music on the show -- and he and Rich talk music and hockey and the connection between the two. Yes, there is one.
Also, a quick alert to a show you may wish to tune into on the weekend -- the fifth episode of The Nerve, which focuses on the fascinating subject of how music is intertwined with a sense of identity. You can hear that on Inside The Music Saturday Edition(12:00 p.m., 1:00 AT, 1:30 NT), and for more on The Nerve stay tuned to The Blog. For now, here are the rest of the day's broadcast highlights:
Radio 2 Morning (6 a.m.-10 a.m.) The Dylan legacy continues, Canada style, with covers of This Wheel's On Fire -- Tom plays versions both old and new, from Canadian musicians. In the second hour, a Canadian classic-to-be from Ray Condo And His Hardrock Goners. Hour three brings some music from an American classic -- folk singer Phil Ochs whose songs of protest are still relevant today...in the last hour of the show, a bluegrass, yes bluegrass, version of Prince's When Doves Cry.
Tempo (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.) Today Julie launches a Friday series of live concert recordings from the European Broadcasting Union. This Friday, a special concert from Stockholm held to honour Nobel Prize winners. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy plays music by Wagner and Ravel.
