Today On Radio 2 05/09/08
The weekend draws nigh, and as part of the launch of three new shows you can hear Molly Johnson hosting the weekend edition of Radio 2 Morning starting Saturday morning.
But today is another weekday, Miss Scarlett, and on it you will hear Tom Allen with Radio 2 Morning (6 a.m.-10 a.m.), Julie Nesrallah with Tempo (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.) and Rich Terfry with Radio 2 Drive (3 p.m.-6 p.m.).
Did you know that these shows all have their own show blogs? Still in the early stages, as are the programmes themselves, but if you'd like to have a boo, just click on those show links.
And here's what's in the on-air hopper today:
Radio 2 Morning (6 a.m.-10 a.m.) Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso is one of the best musicians on the face of the planet. Admittedly there are many, but still, if you're drawing up a short list, he'd be on it. Today Tom will play some music from Veloso -- in a duet with an icon of another kind -- Jane Birkin. You'll also hear some new tracks from Sloan and Doane. (As in the band, and Melanie, not some new country act.)
Tempo (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.) Julie concludes her first week of programming with highlights including Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, the Haydn "Surprise" Symphony and Schumann's Piano Concerto In A Minor.
Radio 2 Drive (3 p.m.-6 p.m.) Among a multitude of tunes, Rich plays something from Divine Brown's new recording promised to be "do-woppy and loads of fun," which if it lives up to what I've heard off that album to date, is a promise that will be kept. Among other performers you can also hear Sloan, K-os, Kathleen Edwards, and The Porkbelly Futures. Yup, no longer just part of the agricultural landscape and stock exchange, but a band featuring writer/musician Paul Quarrington.
Tonic (6 p.m.) Katie gets the weekend started on CBC Radio 2 with new music from the vocal group Take 6 -- and features a set of tunes from Oscar Peterson, recorded live at Salle Pleyel in Paris in June, 1996.
Canada Live (8 p.m.) Three concerts of a Friday night for you. (Why "of" not "on"? Don't know, it just sounds nice.) First, the A Propos' Songwriters' Session, feat. Bïa, Moran, Yves Desrosiers and Catherine Major. Second bandonean player Denis Plante & guitarist Pascal Bujold. (That link will take you to the Concert On Demand.) And third, classical violinist Regis Pasquier with jazz pianist Oliver Jones. Yes, you read that right! (Doing jazz standards, in case you are wondering.)
The Signal (10 p.m.) Tonight Pat kicks off the fall season with his own private and very mellow Jose Gonzales session. Pat will also be spinning new music from throat singer Tagaq.
