As the sun came out on on this late afternoon day in September, the results came in from the 2010 version of the Banff International String Quartet Competition. The sunny sky reflected the sunny results for the two all-Canadian quartets.
The Cecilia won both first prize and the Canadian prize (for the performance of the imposed Canadian piece, Commedia dell'arte, by Ana Sokolovic, a co-commission of the CBC and the Banff Centre).
The Afiara won second prize as well as the Szekely Prize for the best performance in the Beethoven / Schubert round.
To round out the prizes, France's Quatuor Zaide took third prize in the competition.
Keep reading for lots more of post-announcement coverage including an interview with Min-Jeong Koh of the Cecilia Quartet.

That's the composer Anna Sokolovic in conversation with BISQC's Barry Shiffman. She's written the imposed work for BISQC this year. The piece is called
Commedia dell'arte and each of the nine quartets competing at BISQC this year played it Friday afternoon. The work leaves a lot of room for interpretation, so it's fascinating to listen to all the performers and hear the imaginative reading that each group brings to the work.
In Concert host Bill Richardson sat down with Anna shortly before Friday's concert to talk about the piece.
That's Anna Sokolovic in conversation with In Concert's Bill Richardson. We'll have a performance on In Concert tomorrow (11 AM, 11:30 in NT) but if you can't wait and you'd like to hear them all, head over to the

Well to be fair he didn't ask to attend. Besides which, the event is sold out! This fine fellow was spotted by my colleague Matt Baird this morning as he was heading out for his morning coffee (Matt's, not the deer's.). Now I think he's a Mule Deer, but I'm not completely sure, maybe someone could tell me? In any case, he's a reminder of how close we are to nature. It's a spectacular place for music, where culture meets the mountains. It's understandable how inspired the arts community can be in a place like the Banff Centre. The photo below is of the Banff Centre taken from the top of Tunnel Mountain.

The Beethoven / Schubert round is underway today. In the first rounds, it seemed like it was going to be impossible to tell who was going to get into the finals. But things have become clearer as each performance round has taken place. The CBC team is placing their bets and I'd invite you to listen to the concerts (click
Quartets on Demand above) and make your choice. I'll be blogging through the evening and will let you know ASAP once the final three have been chosen.
Just a reminder that we'll be streaming the finals live tomorrow at 2 PM Mountain time (that's 4 PM Eastern (1 PM Pacific). Come back here to the BISQC Radio 2 site to listen in.

The CBC Radio 2 team put together a little Quartet Quiz in front of a live audience here at BISQC yesterday. We invited the Miro Quartet to the quiz and they bravely stepped up to the plate! As part of the quiz, we asked them to play pieces on kazoos (purchased at a dollar store in downtown Banff). Keep reading to hear and see them perform and also for a chance to win a double CD set of Bartok String Quartets as performed by the Hagen Quartet.
