Scottish writer Ali Smith said "that it is the duty of both readers and writers to 'be as open as a book, and alive to the life in language.'" Her dazzling new novel, How to Be Both has landed her a third short-listing for the Man Booker prize.

''We are never going to be post-mystery and any thinking that we are is foolish.  As human beings, mystery is one of the most important staples of our lives.  The things we do not know become more and more important the older we get."
