The Backward Class: Meet India's "untouchable" students

Filmmaker Madeleine Grant on her acclaimed Hot Docs award winning film.
Filmmaker  Madeleine Grant joins guest host Daniel Richler to discuss her Hot Docs award-winning film,  The Backward Class. The documentary follows a group of students from India's formally banned but culturally ingrained "untouchable" caste as they prepare for their high-stakes final exams.

Grant describes bright but underprivileged pupils hoping to break out of the cycle of poverty and explains how a university education could change the course of their lives.

She also outlines the challenges that remain, and why deeper change may take more than a generation.
