This week in France, a new law makes it illegal for supermarkets to throw out unsold food. Now, it must be donated to charities or the business owners will face stiff fines or even jail time. With an estimated 31-billion dollars worth of edible food being thrown out each year in Canada, a group of activists in Vancouver held an event this past Wednesday called Feeding 5000 to bring awareness to the issue of wasted food. Thousands showed up for a free meal made entirely from donated food that would have otherwise been discarded. We speak with Jennifer Rustemeyer who is one of the organizers of the event. She has a perspective on wasted food not many of us share. For six months, she lived entirely off scavenged food as an experiment documented in the film, "Just Eat It."
