This week on Quirks & Quarks.

June 2: The Day the World Discovered the Sun — On June 5, 2012, Venus will pass directly between the Sun and the Earth - an event known as a "Transit of Venus," which only occurs twice per century.  This week, we'll look back at the transit of June 3, 1769, which sparked a worldwide competition among aspiring global superpowers, each sending their own scientific expeditions to far-flung destinations to track Venus. These pioneers used the transit to measure the distance to the Sun, and refine the methods of discovering longitude at sea.
