Vanier riding contains that part of Québec City bounded by: the boundary of Quebec City with the towns of St-Émile and Charlesbourg, Autoroute Laurentienne (175), Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel, the boundary of the towns of Vanier and Quebec, Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel, Avenue St-Sacrement, Autoroute Charest (440), the boundary of Quebec City and Ste-Foy, Autoroute du Vallon(740), Autoroute Charest (440), Autoroute Henri-IV (73), the boundary of Quebec City with the towns of Ste-Foy, L'Ancienne-Lorette and Ste-Foy, Autoroute Henri-IV (573), the overhead electric power line and the boundary of Quebec City and Loretteville.


Redistribution:
Riding created in 1972 from parts of St-Sauveur, Limoilou and Louis-Hébert ridings.
No change in redistribution before 1989 election.

In 1992 redistribution, lost areas to Limoilou, Chaveau and La Peltrie and gained areas from La Peltrie and Chaveau.

In 2001 redistribution:

  • kept 87% of riding; 13% to Taschereau; gained 8% of La Peltrie;

  • lost to Taschereau - that part of Québec City bounded by: boul Wilfrid-Hamel, ave Lamontagne, 18e Rue, 3e Ave, St-Charles River and the border of Quebec and Vanier (6,801 electors);

  • gained, in the west, from La Peltrie, that part of Québec bounded by: border between Quebec and Loretteville, Saint-Charles River, Autoroute Félix-Leclerc, the border between Quebec and L'Ancienne-Lorette and Ste-Foy, Autoroute Henri-IV (4,636 electors)

  • LIB FERNAND DUFOUR won in 1973; defeated in 1976.

  • PQ JEAN-FRANCOIS BERTRAND won in 1976 and 1981; defeated in 1985. Appointed Minister of Communications, April 30, 1981; added Government House Leader, Feb. 23, 1982; Deputy Government House Leader, 1984-85.

  • LIB JEAN-GUY LEMIEUX won in 1985 and 1989.

  • In 1994, PQ DIANE BARBEAU defeated LIB ANDRE MORIN by 8,799 votes.

  • In 1998, PQ BARBEAU defeated LIB MARC ROBERT by 2,477 votes.
