South-east Montreal.  Radio-Canada is in the riding. Riding includes upscale Habitat 67 and Tropique Nord highrises, the casino, most of old Montreal, the Gay Village and part of Chinatown.

Sainte-Marie Saint-Jacques contains that part of Montréal bounded by: Rachel Street East, Frontenac and its extension, the St. Lawrence River passing around and including the île Sainte-Hélène and the île Notre-Dame, Victoria Bridge, Bonaventure Autoroute (10), Rue de la Commune Ouest, Rue McGill, Rue Saint-Antoine Ouest, Rue Saint-Antoine Est, extension of the Rue Sanguinet, such way, boulevard René-Lévesque East and Saint-Laurent Boulevard.

Redistribution:
Riding created in 1988 redistribution from:
19,124 electors from Sainte-Marie and 24,626 from Saint-Jacques.

In 1992 redistribution:

  • kept most of riding;

  • lost area to Mercier and gained 10,954 electors from St-Louis.

    In 2001 redistribution:

  • kept 89% of riding; 11% moved to Hochelaga-Maisonneuve;

  • lost to Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, from north, area south of CP rail line. New southern boundary is Rue Frontenac (5,130 electors)

    Political History:

  • LIB MALEPART defeated PQ TREMBLAY in 1973 by 48 votes.

  • In 1976, PQ GUY BISAILLON defeated MALEPART; BISAILLON won in 1981. Bisaillon left caucus to sit as Independent on June 21, 1982, after disagreeing with Bill 70, on civil servants' wages.

  • LIB MICHEL LAPORTE won in 1985.

    ST. JACQUES

  • PQ CLAUDE CHARRON won in 1970, 1973, 1976, 1981. Appointed Minister responsible for High Commission on Youth, Recreation and Sports (1976); Government House Leader and Minister responsible for Parliamentary Affairs in Sept. 1979; reappointed 1981. When Eaton's pressed charges against Charron for stealing sports coat, he resigned from Cabinet on Feb. 23, 1982. After being charged with drunk driving, he resigned as MNA on Nov. 9, 1982.

  • LIB SERGE CHAMPAGNE won June 10, 1983 byelection. He died on April 23, 1984.

  • In Nov. 26, 1984 byelection, LIB JEAN-FRANCOIS VIAU defeated PQ ANDRE BOULERICE.

  • In 1985, PQ BOULERICE defeated VIAU by 1,864 votes.

  • In 1989, PQ ANDRÉ BOULERICE, incumbent from Saint-Jacques, defeated LIB MICHEL LAPORTE, incumbent from Sainte-Marie, by 5,450 votes.

  • In 1994, PQ BOULERICE defeated LIB MARTIN ORE by 6,662 votes.

  • In 1998, PQ BOULERICE defeated LIB CLAUDE LONGPRÉ by 6,808 votes.
