Rivière-du-Loup riding contains the following municipalities: L'Isle-Verte, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, Notre-Dame- du-Portage, Rivière-du-Loup, Saint-Antonin, Saint-Arsène, Saint-Clément, Saint-Cyprien, Saint-Éloi, Saint-Épiphane, Sainte-Françoise, Saint-François-Xavier-de-Viger, Saint-Georges-de-Cacouna, Saint-Georges- de-Cacouna, Saint-Guy, Saint-Hubert-
de-Rivière-du-Loup, Saint-Jean-de-Dieu, Saint-Mathieu-de-Rioux, Saint-Médard, Saint-Modeste, Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix, Sainte-Rita,Saint-Simon and Trois-Pistoles.

Riding also contains the First Nation reserves of Cacouna and Whitworth.

Redistribution:
Only minor change in 1988 redistribution.
No change in redistribution before 1994 election.

In 2001 redistribution:

  • kept 100% of riding; added 3% of Rivière-du-Loup;

  • gained from Rimouski - Saint-Guy, Saint-Mathieu-de-Rioux, Saint-Médard and Saint-Simon (1,136 electors);

  • LIB PAUL LAFRANCE won in 1970 and 1973; defeated in 1976.

  • PQ JULES BOUCHER won in 1976 and 1981.

  • Boucher resigned from PQ to sit as an Independent on Jan. 28, 1985 - after Levesque's statement that sovereignty should not be an issue in the next election (Article 1 of PQ constitution).

  • In 1985, LIB ALBERT COTE defeated PQ DENISE LEVESQUE by 2,304 votes. Appointed Minister responsible for Forests, Dec. 1985.

  • In 1989, LIB COTE defeated PQ HAROLD LEBEL by 2,581 votes. Reappointed Minister responsible for Forests, Oct. 11, 1989; Minister of Forests, Jan 1991. Côté resigned on Jan. 7, 1994 and byelection was called for Aug. 29. Byelection cancelled with the election call.

  • In 1994, ADQ MARIO DUMONT defeated PQ HAROLD LeBEL by 6,699 votes.

  • In 1998, ADQ DUMONT defeated PQ LISE CHOUINARD by 4,589 votes.
