Riding is a contrasting mix of francophone elites in Outrement, bohemian Mile End and multi-ethnic, working class Cote des Neiges.

Language Breakdown: % mother tongue - single answers
Anglo: 15.5%
Franco: 52.9%
Allo: 31.6% (4% Arabic; 2.5% Spanish 2% Greek)

Outremont riding contains that part of bounded by: the boundary of the borough of Outremont with the towns of Montreal, Mount-Royal and  the CPR railway line, the extension of the avenue de l'Esplanade, such way, Fairmount Avenue West, de l'Esplanade Avenue, Mont-Royal Ouest Avenue, the voie Camillien-Houde, Chemin Remembrance, Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, the boundary of the towns of Montreal and Westmount, Chemin de la Côte-Saint-Luc, Décarie Autoroute (15) and Chemin de la Côte-Sainte-Catherine.

Redistribution:
Riding created in 1965 from part of Montreal-Outremont.

In redistribution before 1989 election, kept all old riding and added 5.26% WESTMOUNT.
In 1992 redistribution, lost part of riding to Mount-Royal and gained areas from Mercier and Westmount ridings.

No change in 2001 redistribution.

  • LIB JEROME CHOQUETTE won in 1966, 1970 and 1973. Minister of Financial Institutions, Companies & Co-operatives, May to Oct. 1970; Minister of Justice, May 1970 to July 1975; Minister of Education, July to Sept. 1975. Resigned on Sept. 26, 1975; Dec. 14, 1975 - founded with Fabien Roy, le Parti national populaire. Became leader, Oct. 24, 1976.

  • In 1976, LIB ANDRE RAYNAULD defeated PQ PIERRE HARVEY by 2,387 votes.

  • NOW PNP CHOQUETTE was third with 14.2% of the vote. Choquette quit PNP in March 1977; rejoined Liberals on Jan. 16, 1978. Raynauld resigned on June 3, 1980.

  • In byelection on Nov. 17, 1980, LIB PIERRE FORTIER defeated PQ NICOLE BOILY. LIB FORTIER was re-elected in 1981 and 1985. Appointed Minister responsible for Privatization, Dec. 12, 1985; Minister responsible for Finances and for Privatization, Aug 1986.

  • In 1989, LIB GERALD TREMBLAY defeated PQ MARC LANGEVIN by 2,964 votes. Appointed Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology, Oct 1989; Minister of Industry, Trade, Science & Technology, Jan. 11, 1994.

  • In 1994, LIB TREMBLAY defeated PQ SALOMON COHEN by 9,528 votes. On March 14, 1996 - he announced he was returning to the private sector; said he was not happy with federalist strategy in referendum.

  • In June 10, 1996 byelection, LIB PIERRE-ÉTIENNE LAPORTE defeated PQ ARMAND ELBAZ.

  • In 1998, LIB LAPORTE defeated PQ JEAN-FRANÇOIS THUOT by 8,172 votes.
