Orford riding consists of the following municipalities: Ayer's Cliff, Barnston-Ouest, Hatley, Magog, North Hatley, Ogden, Omerville, Orford, Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, Stanstead and Stanstead-East.

It also contains borough 5 of the city of Sherbrooke.

Redistribution:
Riding created in 1972 from Stanstead riding and parts of Shefford and Sherbrooke ridings.

Minor changes in 1988 and 1992 redistributions.

In 2001 redistribution:

kept 88% of riding; 9% moved to Saint-François, 2% to Sherbrooke and 1% to Johnson; gained 1% of Saint-François and .01% of Sherbrooke.

lost to Saint-François, from SE corner, the part of the Ville de Coaticook in the riding (6,096 electors);

lost to Sherbrooke, from NE corner, the part of Ascot included in the riding and part Rock Forest (1,340 electors);

lost area to Johnson - parts of Saint-Élie-d Orford (67 electors);

gained from Saint-François, in NE - Hatley Canton (582 electors);

Political History:

In 1973, LIB GEORGES VAILLANCOURT won in this new riding. Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, 1973-75; Minister of State for Agriculture, July 1975 to Nov. 1976. LIB VAILLLANCOURT was re-elected in 1976, 1981 and 1985.

In 1989, LIB ROBERT BENOIT defeated PQ HENRI BOURASSA by 7,635 votes.

In 1994, LIB BENOIT defeated PQ GINETTE THERRIEN by 3,787 votes.

In 1998, LIB BENOIT defeated PQ OLIVIER DÉSILETS by 4,916 votes. Benoit announced on February 27, 2003 he would not be running again.
