Mercier riding contains that part of Montréal bounded by: the CPR railway line, Rachel street east, Rachel street west, L'Esplanade avenue, Fairmount avenue west.

Redistribution:
Riding created in 1965 from Montréal-Mercier.
No change in redistribution before 1989 election.

In 1992 Redistribution, lost area to Outremont and gained, in west, parts of St-Louis and Ste-Marie-St-Jacques.

No change in 2003 redistribution.

  • LIB ROBERT BOURASSA won here in 1966, 1970 and 1973. Bourassa elected Leader of Liberal Party of Quebec, January 17,1970. Sworn in as Premier and Minister of Finance, May 12, 1970; Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Feb. 1971 to Feb. 1972 and Oct. to Nov. 1976.

  • In 1976, PQ GERALD GODIN defeated LIB BOURASSA by 3,736 votes. Appointed Minister of Immigration, Nov 1980.

  • In 1981, PQ GODIN defeated LIB YVES BERIAULT by 3,919 votes. Served as Minister of Cultural Communities & Immigration; Minister of State for Cultural & Scientific Development; Minister responsible for Application of French Language Bill; Minister responsible for Linguistic Affairs; Minister of Cultural Affairs. PQ GODIN was re-elected in 1985 and 1989.

  • In 1994, PQ ROBERT PERREAULT defeated LIB ALDA VIERO by 8,044 votes. Appointed Minister of Public Security, Jan 29, 1996; Minister of State for Greater Montreal and Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Aug. 25, 1997.

  • In 1998, PQ PERREAULT defeated LIB ELIZABETH DA SILVA by 8,547 votes. Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Dec. 15, 1998 to Oct.  6, 2000 -- the date he actually resigned as Minister and MNA after having announced on Sept. 28, 2000, citing personal reasons, that he was leaving politics. He said he had entered politics to help Quebec achieve sovereignty and with no referendum soon, it was time to move on.

  • The PQ had problems with Yves Michaud and PQ nomination and; info was then
    released that PQ candidate Toussaint had been accused of conjugal violence (the charges were withdrawn).

  • In April 9, 2001 byelection, LIB NATHALIE ROCHEFORT defeated PQ CLAUDEL TOUSSAINT by 1,038 votes.
