Laurier-Dorion riding contains that part of Montréal bounded by: Metropolitan autoroute (40), Papineau avenue, Jean-Talon East, Jean-Talon West, the CPR railway line and the boundary of the city of Montréal with the town of Outremont and town of Mount-Royal.

Redistribution:
New riding in 1994 election created from parts of Laurier and Dorion.

From Laurier - 24,365 electors; from Dorion - 19,248 electors.

No change in 2001 redistribution.

Political History:

LAURIER: New riding in 1966.

  • In 1966, then LIB RENE LEVESQUE, who had been elected in Montreal Laurier in 1960 and 1962, defeated UN JACQUES DESJARDINS by 6754 votes. Appointed Minister of Public Works and Minister of Hydraulic Resources, Jul/60; Minister of Natural Resources, 1961-65; Minister of Family and Social Welfare, 1965 to June 16, 1966. Quit caucus, sat as INDEPENDENT after Oct. 14, 1967; Founder of mouvement souveraineté-association, Nov. 19, 1967. Became Leader of the PQ on October 14, 1968.

  • In 1970, LIB ANDRE MARCHAND defeated NOW PQ RENE LEVESQUE by 4,331 votes.
    LIB MARCHAND was re-elected in 1973 and 1976.

  • In 1981, LIB CHRISTOS SIRROS defeated PQ NADIA ASSIMOPOULOS. LIB SIRROS was re-elected in 1985 and 1989. Minister responsible for Health & Social Services, Oct. 1989; Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Oct. 1990; Minister of Natural Resources, Jan. to Sept. 1994.

    DORION:  New riding in 1966.

  • LIB ALFRED BOSSE won in 1970 and 1973.

  • In 1976, PQ LISE PAYETTE defeated LIB BOSSE by 5,343 votes. Appointed Minister of Consumers, Co-operatives and Financial Institution Nov 1976; Minister of State responsible for Status of Women, Sept. 21, 1979; Minister of State for Social Development, Nov. 1980 to April 1981. Maybe best known for "Yvette" remarks during 1980 referendum.

  • In 1981, PQ HUGUETTE LACHAPELLE defeated LIB HENRI-FRANCOIS GAUTRIN.

  • In 1985, LIB VIOLETTE TREPANIER defeated PQ LACHAPELLE by 2,498 votes. Appointed Minister responsible for Cultural Communities, March 1989.

  • In 1989, LIB TREPANIER defeated PQ JOSEPH FACAL by 2,207 votes. Appointed Minister responsible for Status of Women and Minister responsible for Family, Oct 1989; Minister of Income Security, Jan. 11 to  Sept. 1994.
