L'Assomption riding contains the city of Repentigny and the Saint-Sulpice parish.
It also contains that part of the Ville de L'Assomption corresponding to the Ville de L Assomption as it existed up until June 30, 2000.
Redistribution:
In redistribution before 1989 election, portion of riding moved to Masson riding. L'Assomption kept 73.57% of former riding.
In 1992 redistribution, lost Saint-Gerard-Majella polls to Rousseau.
No change in 2001 redistribution.
Political History:
LIB JEAN PERREAULT defeated PQ PIERRE DESJARDINS in 1970 and 1973.
In 1976, PQ JACQUES PARIZEAU defeated LIB J-ROLAND COMTOIS by 14,439 votes. (Parizeau had been defeated in Ahuntsic in 1970 & in Cremazie in 1973) Appointed Minister of Finance and Minister of Revenue, Nov. 1976; President of Treasury Board, 1976 to 1981.
In 1981, PQ PARIZEAU defeated LIB ANDRE OUELLETTE by 10,455 votes. Appointed Minister of Finance and Minister of Financial Institutions and Co-operatives, April 30, 1981. One of the "Group of 12" who resigned from Cabinet on Nov. 22, 1984, after Levesque said that sovereignty should not be an issue in next election (Article 1 of Constitution). He resigned as MNA on Nov. 27, 1984.
In byelection on June 3, 1985, LIB JEAN-GUY GERVAIS defeated PPCQ ANDRE ASSELIN.
In 1985, LIB JEAN-GUY GERVAIS defeated PQ BERNARD BASTIEN by 216 votes.
In 1989, PQ JACQUES PARIZEAU defeated LIB JEAN-GUY GERVAIS by 5,134 votes.
(Parizeau had been elected leader of PQ on March 18, 1988)
In 1994, PQ PARIZEAU defeated LIB LUC ARCHAMBAULT by 10,992 votes. Sworn in as Premier and Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Sept 26/94; Interim Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for Application of French Language Charter, Jan. 30 to Aug. 2, 1995. Parizeau resigned on Jan. 29, 1996.
In June 10, 1996 byelection, PQ JEAN-CLAUDE ST-ANDRÉ defeated LIB FERNAND PRUD'HOMME by 6,480 votes.
In 1998, PQ ST-ANDRÉ defeated LIB MICHEL TREMBLAY by 10,745 votes.
