La Prairie riding contains following municipalities: Candiac,
Delson, La Prairie, Saint-Constant, Saint-Mathieu and Saint-Philippe.

Redistribution
A previous riding of Laprairie existed from 1830-1919.
Riding re-established from Napierville-Laprairie before 1973 election.

In re-distribution before 1989 election, kept 48.42% LAPRAIRIE and added 35.45% CHATEAUGUAY.

No change in redistribution before 1994 election.

In 2001 redistribution:

  • kept 82% of riding; 18% moved to Châteauguay

  • lost, to Châteauguay - from western part of riding - city of Sainte-Catherine; (10,817 electors).

    Political History:

  • In 1973, LIB PAUL BERTHIAUME, elected in Napierville-Laprairie in 1970
    ran and won in this new riding. Minister of State/Transport, Nov. 1973; added Minister of State, Finance, July 1975.

  • In 1976, PQ GILLES MICHAUD defeated LIB BERTHIAUME by 647 votes.

  • In 1981, LIB JEAN-PIERRE SAINTONGE defeated PQ MICHAUD by 328 votes.

  • In 1985, LIB SAINTONGE defeated PQ ESTELLE LAFONTAINE by 9,968. Appointed Deputy Speaker, December 1985. Ran in La Pinière in 1989.

  • In 1989, PQ DENIS LAZURE defeated LIB YVON POMMAINVILLE by 790 votes. (Lazure won in Chambly in 1976; in Bertrand in 1981; resigned, 1984. Was Minister of Social Affairs, Minister of Citizens Relations)

  • In 1994, PQ LAZURE defeated LIB FERNANDE LUSSIER by 8,444 votes. Lazure resigned in Jan. 1996 -- accepted position as head of Handicapped Persons' Office.

  • In Feb. 14, 1996 byelection, PQ MONIQUE SIMARD defeated LIB BERTRAND LEGARE. On Sept.29, 1997, Simard was found guilty of voting illegally in 1995. Montreal municipal election -- had not lived there for a year. Fined minimum penalty of $100 on Oct. 31, 1997. Announced April 5, 1998 she would resign from National Assembly May 1, 1998 and not run again.

  • In 1998, PQ SERGE GEOFFRION defeated LIB LYNE ROWLEY by 9,144 votes.
