Riding created in 1965 from riding of Jonquière-Kénogami.
No change in redistributions before 1989 and 1994 elections.
No change in 2001 redistribution.

Political History:

  • PQ CLAUDE VAILLANCOURT defeated LIB HARVEY in 1976 and 1981. Deputy Speaker, May 1979-Nov. 1980. Speaker Nov. 11, 1980 to March 23, 1983 when he resigned.  He resigned as MNA on June 29, 1983 after being named Provincial Court Judge for District of Roberval, June 22, 1983.

  • In Dec 5, 1983 byelection, LIB ALINE SAINT-AMAND defeated PQ CÉLINE GAGNON.

  • PQ FRANCIS DUFOUR defeated LIB SAINT-AMAND in 1985 and 1989.

  • In 1994, PQ DUFOUR defeated LIB STÉPHANE DALLAIRE by 13,895 votes. Nov. 21, 1995 - Dufour said he had already talked to Bouchard about giving up his seat for him. Jan. 16, 1996 - he resigned his seat.

  • In Feb. 21, 1996 byelection , PQ LUCIEN BOUCHARD, with Liberals not running a candidate, defeated CAN GEORGE BUTCHER by 24,416 votes. Sworn in as Premier on Jan. 29, 1996.

  • In 1998, PQ BOUCHARD defeated LIB GUYLAINE CARON by 13,923 votes. Resigned as president of PQ on Jan. 11, 2001- said he recognized his efforts to quickly relaunch the debate on the national question had been in vain; said his children needed him and he needed to get back to them. He remained premier until March 8, 2001.

  • In Oct. 1, 2001 byelection, LIB FRANÇOISE GAUTHIER defeated PQ NICOLE RACINE by
    4,247 votes.
