Sprawling, large rural riding, stretching from Chelsea all the way to the La Vérendrye park. Riding follows the Gatineau River valley, and the only highway leading to the Abitibi region. Most of population of riding live in the Gatineau Valley; those at the southern end are within commuting distance of Ottawa.  North of that, lumber, agriculture and recreation are the main industries.

Gatineau contains the following municipalities: Aumond, Blue Sea, Bois-Franc, Bouchette, Cantley, Cayamant, Chelsea, Déléage, Denholm, Egan-Sud, Gracefield, Grand-Remous, Kazabazua, Lac-Sainte-Marie, La Pêche, Low, Maniwaki, Messines, Montcerf-Lytton, Northfield, Sainte-Thérèse-de-la-Gatineau and Wright.

It also contains that part of the Ville de Gatineau bounded as follows: the rivière Gatineau, the limit of the Ville de Gatineau with the municipalities of Chelsea, Cantley, Val-des-Monts and L'Ange-Gardien, the montée Mineault and the autoroute de l'Outaouais (50).

Also in the riding are the First Nation reserves of Kitigan Zibi and Lac-Rapide as well as the hamlet of Domaine.

Redistribution
Minor change in redistribution prior to 1989 election.
In 1992 redistribution, small area from SE corner moved to Chapleau.
Gained Cantley poll from Chapleau.

In 2001 redistribution:

  • Kept 99.4% of riding; .4% moved to Pontiac; .2% to Hull

  • gained 3% of Chapleau

  • lost, to Hull, 1 poll from south (167 electors);

  • lost territory in north (11) electors to Abitibi-Est and territory in south with no electors to Pontiac and Labelle ridings

  • gained, in south-east corner, area from north of Chapleau - area bounded by border of Gatineau with Cantley, Val-des-Monts and L'Ange-Gardien, the border of Gatineau and Masson-Angers, l Outaouais autoroute, Gatineau ave(2,025 electors); gained, from Pontiac, Alleyn and Cawood poll -- few electors.

  • In 1973, LIB MICHEL GRATTON defeated PQ MAURICE AUMOND by 11,638 votes. LIB GRATTON was re-elected in 1976, 1981 and 1985. Was Minister of Revenue, 1985-87; appointed Government House Leader and Minister responsible for Electoral Reform, Dec. 1985; added Minister of Tourism, 1987.

  • In 1989, LIB REJEAN LAFRENIERE defeated PQ JOCELYNE GADBOIS by 5,054. In 1994, LIB LAFRENIERE defeated PQ RICHARD PINARD by 9,683 votes. In 1998, LIB LAFRENIERE defeated PQ ERIC SINGH by 9,222 votes.
