Charlesbourg contains that part of Québec City bounded as follows: rue de la Faune, avenue du Zoo, avenue Notre-Dame, rue Saint-Aubert and its extension, rivière des Roches and the boundary of the Ville de Charlesbourg with the towns of Beauport and Québec.

Redistribution:

Riding created in 1972 from parts of Chauveau and Montmorency.

In 1992 redistribution, lost parts of 4 polls to Chauveau and gained parts of 3 polls from Chauveau.

No change in 2001 redistribution.

Political History:

[1994 = 99.97% CHARLESBOURG; .03% CHAUVEAU]

  • In 1973, LIB ANDRE HARVEY, who had won in Chauveau in 1970, won here.

  • In 1976, PQ DENIS DE BELLEVAL defeated LIB ANDRE HARVEY by 4,785 votes. Was VP of Treasury Board, 1976-78; appointed Minister of Public Service, Nov 16/76; Minister of Transport Sept. 1979 - 1981. In 1981, PQ DE BELLEVAL defeated LIB VERONIQUE GUIMONT-BARRY by 5,998 votes.
    de Belleval did not return to Cabinet after election.  He resigned on December 7, 1982 - became VP at Lavalin.

  • In June 20, 1983 by-el, LIB MARC-YVAN COTE defeated PQ ANDRE GINGRAS. (Côté had been elected in Matane in 1973; defeated there in 1976) LIB COTE was re-elected in 1985 and 1989.

  • Appointed Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for Regional Development, Dec 12/85. Appointed Minister of Health & Social Services and Minister responsible for Electoral Reform, Oct 1989; added Minister responsible for Elderly, Oct 5, 1990. Côté had resigned and by-el had been called for August 29.

  • In 1994, PQ JEAN ROCHON defeated LIB ROBERT GINGRAS by 7,495 votes. Appointed Minister of Health and Social Services, Sept 26/94; added Minister responsible for Quebec City region, Jan 29/96. In 1998, PQ ROCHON defeated LIB DENIS ROY by 33 votes. Dec 15/98-June 8/99 - Minister responsible for Research, Science and Technology; Minister of Research, Science and Technology, Jun 8/99 to Mar 8/01; Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity, Mar 8-Nov 13/01. Appointed Minister of Social Solidarity; Minister of Labour, Mar 8/01. Minister of State for Labour and Social Solidarity, Nov 13/01-Jan 30/02. Appointed Minister of State Human Resources and Labour, Jan 30/02. Rochon announced on Jan 26/03 that he wouldn't be running again.
