After the 1992 redistribution, none of the old riding remains. No comparisons should be made between old Bertrand and new Bertrand. It is no longer a South Shore riding. Majority of Bertrand is now in the new riding called Marguerite-D'Youville.

Bertrand contains the following municipalities: Chertsey, Entrelacs, Ivry-sur-le-Lac, Lantier, Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, Piedmond, Sainte-Adèle, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Sainte-Agathe-Nord, Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs, Saint-Donat, Saint-Hippolyte, Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides, Sainte-Marguerite Estérel, Saint-Sauveur, Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts, Val-David, Val-des-Lacs and Val-Morin.

It also contains the First Nation reserve of Doncaster.

Redistribution:

Although a Bertrand riding previously existed, this Bertrand was a new South Shore riding in 1994 election. It was created from: Parts of Rousseau, Prevost and Labelle ridings.

In 2001 redistribution:

  • kept all existing riding and added .7% of Rousseau and .3% Prévost;

  • gained from Prévost, in SW corner, the part of the Paroisse de Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs in Prévost (164 electors);

  • gained from Rousseau, in south, Municipalité de Chertsey from  northern part of Rousseau (309 electors)

    Political History:

    ROUSSEAU

  • PQ RENE BLOUIN won in 1981; defeated by LIB ROBERT THEREIN in 1985.

  • In 1989, LIB THEREIN defeated PQ MURIELLE ANGERS-TURPIN by 5,882.

    LABELLE

  • In 1981, PQ JACQUES LEONARD defeated LIB DAMIEN HETU by 5,774 votes.

  • In 1985, LIB DAMIEN HETU defeated PQ YVON CORMIER by 2,507 votes.

  • In 1989, PQ JACQUES LEONARD ran again and defeated LIB HETU by 2,959.

    PREVOST

  • PQ JEAN-GUY CARDINAL won in 1976. After his death, LIB SOLANGE CHAPUT-ROLLAND was elected in byelection on Nov. 14, 1979.

  • PQ ROBERT DEAN defeated CHAPUT-ROLLAND in 1981. LIB PAUL-ANDRE

  • FORGET defeated PQ DEAN in 1985. FORGET won again in 1989.

  • In 1994, LIB ROBERT THERIEN defeated PQ MONIQUE SIMARD by 146 votes. The results in this riding were contested. Simard said Liberals with primary residences in Montreal voted here because their votes were needed more than in Montreal. Therein tried unsuccessfully to get the case stopped and he appealed each decision against him. On Feb. 21, 1996, he was found guilty of having voted illegally and inciting others to do so -- the election was declared void. The decision was upheld on appeal.

  • In byelection on Oct. 6, 1997, LIB DENIS CHALIFOUX defeated PQ BERNARD GRENIER
    by 2,753 votes.

  • In 1998, PQ CLAUDE COUSINEAU defeated LIB CHALIFOUX by 743 votes.
