Arthabaska contains the following municipalities: Chester-Est, Chesterville, Norbertville, Plessisville, Princeville, St-Christophe-d'Arthabaska, Saint-Norbert-d'Arthabaska, St-Rosaire, St-Valère and Victoriaville.

Redistribution:

In redistribution before 1989 election, 8 per cent of riding moved to Richmond. No change in redistribution before 1994 election or in 2001 redistribution.

Political History:

  • LIB GILLES MASSE won in 1970 and 1973. Minister of Natural Resources, 1970-76. Did not run in 1976.

  • PQ JACQUES BARIL won in 1976 and 1981.

  • In 1985, LIB LAURIER GARDNER defeated PQ BRUNO ST-PIERRE by 2,038 votes.

  • In 1989, PQ JACQUES BARIL ran again and defeated LIB GARDNER by 2,692 votes.

  • In 1994, PQ BARIL defeated LIB MADELEINE DUSSEAULT by 9,126 votes.

  • In 1998, PQ BARIL defeated LIB JACQUES LAMONTAGNE by 7,272 votes. Minister for Transport, Dec. 15, 1998 to March 8, 2001; Appointed Minister responsible for Centre-du-Québec region, Dec. 15, 1998; Appointed Minister for Transport and Maritime Policy, March 8, 2001. Baril announced on Nov. 17, 2002 he would not be running again.
