Abitibi-Ouest contains the following municipalities: Amos, Authier, Authier-Nord, Berry, Champneuf, Chazel, Clermont, Clerval, Colombourg, Duparquet, Dupuy, Gallichan, La Corne, La Morandière, La Motte, Landrienne, La Reine, La Sarre, Launay, Macamic, Normétal, Palmarolle,Poularies, Preissac, Rapide-Danseur, Rochebaucourt, Roquemaure,St-Dominique-du-Rosaire, St-Félix-de-Dalquier, Ste-Germaine-Boulé, Ste-Gertrude-Manneville, Ste-Hélène-de-Mancebourg, St-Lambert, St-Marc-de-Figuery, St-Mathieu-d'Harricana, Taschereau, Trécesson and Val-St-Gilles.

Also in the riding are: the First Nation reserve of Pikogan, the localities and hamlets of Despinassy, Guyenne, Languedoc and St-Eugène-de-Chazel.

In 2001 redistribution:

  • lost, in NW, that part of James Bay which was in the riding, to the Ungava riding. Kept 98 per cent of riding; 2 per cent moved to Ungava

  • In 1973, LIB JEAN-HUGUES BOUTIN defeated PC AURELE AUDET by 2,712 votes.

  • In 1976, PQ FRANCOIS GENDRON defeated RC ROGER BUREAU by 1,224 votes.  LIB BOUTIN came in third.  Gendron was appointed Minister of Public Service, September 1979.

  • In 1981, PQ GENDRON defeated LIB CLAIRE LABRECHE by 8,384 votes. Appointed Minister of State for Planning, April 198l; Minister of Planning and Regional Development & Chair of Planning Committee, September 1982; appointed Minister of Education, December 1984 to December 1985. PQ GENDRON was re-elected in 1985, 1989 and 1994. Appointed Minister of Natural Resources Sept. 26, 1994 to Jan. 29, 1996.

  • In 1998, PQ GENDRON defeated LIB MARTIN VEILLEUX by 7,400 votes. Appointed Minister of Natural Resources, Feb. 13, 2002 (after the resignation of Gilles Baril).
