Abitibi-Est contains the following municipalities: Barraute, Belcourt, Malartic, Rivière-Héva, Senneterre and Val-d Or. It also comprises part of the Ville de Rouyn-Noranda corresponding to the Ville de Cadillac  and to the unorganized territories of Lac-Montanier, Lac-Surimau and Rapide-des-Cèdres, the First Nation settlements and reserves of Kitcisakik, Lac-Simon, the localities and hamlets of Beattyville, Colonie-Fournière, Rapide-Deux and Rapide-Sept; the following unorganized territories: Lac-Fouillac, Lac Granet, Lac-Metei, Matchi-Manitou and Réservoir-Dozois as well as part of the unorganized territory of Lac-Despinassy composed of the townships of Bartouille (part), Ducros (part) and Laas (part).

Riding created from part of the Abitibi riding, which was divided into two ridings in 1944—Abitibi-Est and Abitibi-Ouest.

Political History:

In 1970, RC RONALD TETRAULT defeated LIB ROGER HOUDE by 4,320 votes.

In 1973, LIB ROGER HOUDE defeated PC RONALD TETRAULT by 6,657 votes.

In 1976, PQ JEAN-PAUL BORDELEAU defeated RC PIERRE DALLAIRE by 3,881.

In 1981, PQ BORDELEAU defeated LIB NOELLA LABELLE by 7,198 votes.

In 1985, LIB RAYMOND SAVOIE defeated PQ BORDELEAU by 1,742 votes. Appointed Minister responsible for Mines, December 1985; Minister of Mines and Native Affairs, March 1986.

In 1989, LIB SAVOIE defeated PQ ANDRE PELLETIER by 2,465 votes. Savoie appointed Minister responsible for Mines, Regional Development and Minister responsible for Application of Professional Laws, October 1989; Minister of Revenue and Minister responsible for Application of Laws, October 1990 to Jan. 11, 1994.
