Cree re-elect Matthew Coon Come as Grand Chief
Matthew Coon Come will continue to serve as Grand Chief of the Quebec Grand Council of the Crees. Coon Come has won the run-off election for the top job which was held yesterday. Rodney Mark was elected Deputy Grand Chief.
The run-off election was held after none of the candidates got the absolute majority needed to win in the first round held last week. Telecommunications problems also hampered both rounds of voting. And now that Coon Come has been elected, many new and ongoing issues in Cree communities are waiting to be tackled.
To discuss some of these issues and to give their impressions of the campaign is Dianne Reid, President and CEO of the Cree Cultural Institute in Oujé-Bougoumou. She was also Chair of the Cree Health Board from 2001 to 2008. She joined us on the line from her home in Nominingue.
Also joining the conversation is Stella Bearskin who is on the Board of the Cree Women of Eeyou Istchee Association, and is involved in several projects in her community of Chisasibi.
