North Shore: July 2013 Archives

Northern parts of the province have been affected by major forest fires over the past weeks. Residents of Eastmain had to be evacuated at the beginning of July, when the largest forest fire ever recorded in Quebec came within 4 kilometers of the town. That fire has burned over 625,000 hectares of forest. Weeks later, another large fire forced the evacuation of residents in the community of Baie-Johan-Beetz.
Summer host Shawn Lyons spoke to a Forestry research scientist about the increase of fires. Martin Girardin is Research scientist for Natural Resources Canada in Quebec City and he joined us on the line from Rouyn-Noranda this morning.
