Graham Fraser on Quebec language policy
During the last election campaign, Pauline Marois pledged to overhaul Quebec's French-language charter. Once elected, the PQ wasted little time in introducing Bill 14. The bill includes several changes including: an ammendment that could strip some municipalities of their bilingual status, proposed language restrictions to small businesses, and proposed changes to the province's charter of Rights and Freedoms to indicate the right "to live and work in French in Quebec". Following the election, the commissioner of official languages, Graham Fraser said he would be watching closely to make sure that any new laws did not violate language rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Graham Fraser is in town this week for meetings with several members of the PQ government. He joined Susan Campbell in studio this morning.
