Haiti: In Extremis
A new exhibition at the Musée de la Civilization in Quebec City celebrates the dark and the light in contemporary Haitian art. It's called Haiti: in extremis. Our Julia Caron went by for a visit on opening day, guided by Marla Berns, director of the Fowler museum at UCLA. That's the museum that lent many of the contemporary works, ranging from paintings, beaded flags, and sculptures, to the Musee de la Civilization. Marla Berns was in Haiti shortly after the 2010 earthquake, and shares firsthand how natural disaster and tragedy shaped what Haitian artists are driven to share with the world.
