Gaspé standing tall to Petrolia's oil-drilling interests
Two months ago, the exploration company Petrolia was all set to begin drilling on its Haldimand-4 site in Gaspé. If things went well, the company expected it would soon be pumping oil out of the ground as Quebec's first real oil-producing well. But, there was one big problem: the site is located within the town of Gaspé.
In December, town Council adopted a regulation which essentially prohibits any drilling on its territory, in order to protect the water supply. As a result, all work has stopped. On Friday, Gaspé Mayor François Roussy came into our studios to spell out the town's case, and he spoke with Quebec AM's Glenn Wanamaker.
