Canada Games torch at Lennoxville Elementary School

Lennoxville.jpgThe countdown is on to the 2013 edition of the Canada Summer Games, which are being hosted in Sherbrooke. An important symbol of those Games - the torch - was lit on Parliament Hill earlier this month and is now making its way across Quebec. Our Eastern Townships Correspondant Sarah Rogers take you to one torch ceremony at Lennoxville Elementary School.

You heard grade 5 student Marina Guthrie-Drew and
grade 3 student Maria Gilbert. Both had a chance to carry the torch at Lennoxville Elementary school yesterday afternoon - and each represented a different province or territory that will participate in the Games. The event hits close to home for these students - Lennoxville will be hosting a number of the Games events this summer, mostly on the Bishop's University campus.

Bilingual municipalities voice opposition for Bill 14

ayerscliff.jpgFebruary 11th is the last day to make a submission to upcoming public hearings on Bill 14 - but it certainly won't be the last we'll hear of it. Since the Parti Quebecois government introduced proposed changes to province's language charter under Bill 14, bilingual municipalities have been fighting back.

As part of a growing movement, 42 towns and cities across Quebec that carry bilingual status have passed resolutions telling the province they want to stay that way - bilingual. Ayer's Cliff is one town in the Eastern Townships that calls itself "franglais" and proud of it.

Our Eastern Townships Correspondant Sarah Rogers spoke with Mayor Alec van Zuiden about these issues.

Colin Standish is an Eastern Townshipper, born and raised, who currently calls Quebec City home while he studies law at Laval University. He has many concerns about the changes laid out in Bill 14 and what they'll mean for communities in the Townships and for English-speakers across the province.
