Hearings on Gentilly 2
Many people are attending the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission hearings in Becancour this week. The CNSA is deciding whether to renew the licence of the Gentilly 2 nuclear power plant. Some people at the hearings are worried about the chances of a nuclear accident, espcially after seeing the disaster unfold in Fukushima. The CBC's Ainslie MacLellan heard from several opponents.
Luc Vermette owns an industrial engineering firm that works with Hydro Quebec on projects for Gentilly 2. Denis Rancourt is a former engineer for the nuclear plant. Both believe up to two thousand jobs could be created by extending the licence and eventually refurbishing the plant. They told Ainslie they're convinced the plant is safe.
